Senior Mooting

Senior Mooting Semester 1

WHAT IS THE SENIOR MOOT?

The Notre Dame Law Students’ Society (‘NDLSS’) Senior Moot is the most distinguished competition offered by the NDLSS. The purpose of the competition is to assess the competitors' legal research and formulation of legal argument on a contentious point of law. Mooting provides students with an opportunity to develop their oral and analytical skills in the formal environment of a courtroom.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

A moot is a simulated judicial proceeding based on a hypothetical scenario. This is usually an appeal against an earlier decision. Two teams each consisting of two students debate issues of law, with one team representing the appellants and the other the respondents.

The objective of the moot is to present the most persuasive argument in your favour based on the hypothetical scenario. Students are also encouraged to prepare for any potential rebuttals offered by the opposing team. Competitors must ensure they have a thorough understanding of the facts and the case law surrounding that point of law.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

This competition aims to help students improve their advocacy skills, formulation of persuasive legal argument, drafting of legal documents and court etiquette.

WHO CAN APPLY?

Students who are enrolled in a law course at Notre Dame are eligible to participate. This course, while the senior competition, is open to junior students as well. Students will sign-up individually and will be randomly assigned a partner each round.

Students are permitted to request a specific partner for round one.

STUDENT FEEDBACK

“Senior Moot was really well organised in 2018 and it was a pleasure to compete.  Presenting to a Full Bench (Justice Mazza, Johnson Kitto and Dean Squelch) was a great thrill.  So was receiving their encouragement and guidance.  I would like to especially thank the organisers (Amara and Ciara), our judges and my fellow competitors for such an enjoyable and rewarding competition.  I encourage everyone considering entering future moots to have a go.  Mooting at NDU is a great way to improve your legal knowledge and practice advocacy skills in a realistic and challenging setting.” (Sean Foy – 2018 Senior Moot Winner)"
